Tyler Perry's new movie is written after "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf" a 1975 stage play written by Ntozak Shange. It was then published as a book in 1977. After being edited, it was then turned into a movie in 1982 starring Alfre Woodard and Lynn Whitfield. It is a collection of 20 poems with a cast of nameless women, each are known by color only "Lady in purple", "Lady in yellow"...etc. The poems deal with abandonment, rape, abortion, and love. Tyler Perry's version will star: Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, Mariah Carey, Kimberly Elise, Phlicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington and Isaiah Mustafa. The film is due to release January 2011.
