Naomi Campbell's Hair!

This photo has been seen all over the net and all I can say is that I see this all the time. It is usually due to over processing. Naomi has a condition known as Traction Alopecia which is caused by damage done to the hair follicle by continual pulling and tight tension for very long periods to the hair. This type of hair loss has been on the rise as people continue to damage there hair. It occurs in people who wear tight braids, especially dreadlocks that lead to pulling, tension and breaking of hair. This condition most commonly affects african american women.

TREATMENT:

1. Loosen up your hairstyles to remove stress from the follicles.
2. Deep Conditioning scalp message once a month.
3. Medication for severe cases. Oral and topical antibiotics followed by either cortisone injections and/or  topical cortisone cream to reduce the inflammation that is damaging the follicles. After that Rogaine may be perscribed to stimulate quicker re-growth at 2% generally or 5% depending on the amount and severity of the hair follicle trauma.
4. Hair transplant surgery may be suggested for damaged hair beyond repair. Seek a skilled doctor that specializes in hair replacement surgery for african american women. The surgery can restore an African American woman’s healthy hairline and self-esteem.
